How I’m Making a Change in 2020
Last year, I learned a lot of things about myself. I learned about dietary needs for my body, new interests, and personal needs. This year, having found the things I really need to do to be entirely healthy, my goal is to be consistent in my personal goals and needs. I am very much at a point in my life where I want to do everything that makes me happy, makes me feel good, and is best for my health. So, this year is going to be the year of doing what is good for me.
Now, I’ve tried this whole New Years resolution thing before with a variety of different things, but we all know they never really work out or last. Every year I tell myself that that year is going to be the year that I eat healthier, workout a little more than I normally do, etc. But this year, I’ve noticed something different about my intentions in what I’m saying I plan on doing. Rather than feeling a need to do these things to appear better on the outside for other people, I want to do these things for myself. I’ve noticed that they make me feel good, energetic, productive, and extremely happy. Having said this, here are my 2020 goals…
Good Eats Make for a Good Year
One thing I have always been into is good food. I love trying foods, visiting new and exciting restaurants, and finding hidden treasures wherever I go. Every meal I try to eat clean and healthy, and for the most part I do, but I also believe that treating myself every once in a while is healthy as well. About once or twice a week I like to try and find a new restaurant or cafe to try out. This has become something that is super important for me to do for myself because it’s something that makes me happy, it gets me outside and walking around, and it also allows me to explore and view some more of the world, even the tiniest bit. I have found that it isn’t too much of a sacrifice cost wise because during the week I’m very good about not buying food and making use of my meal plan and the meals school has to offer (and also thank you my sweet boyf for never letting me pay for any of our meals. *crying* and *blessed*). So, on the weekends I make it a point to eat one treat myself meal simply because it’s one small thing that makes me one big ol’ happy girl!!
New Ways to Exercise in the New Year
This next goal is something I’ve found to be a brand new love of mine… hiking! I’ve always loved exercising and working out, and I live a very active lifestyle as it is, but sometimes being in the gym can get old. Since coming to school, my favorite days have been the ones where I finish the day walking a whole 5-8 miles. Walking is something super enjoyable for me and it allows me to get a little bit of extra exercise in for the day without even realizing it. Another thing is that it’s a really healthy and fun way to see things. Not only are you being active, but you can also soak up everything around you without moving by it all too quick.
So, from my love of walking everywhere, birthed a new passion for hiking. I am by no means an expert in any of this, but it is something I want to continue to become more educated in. This has also become an interest because it’s a super inexpensive thing to do. I had talked a bit about my first little experience in my last post about Great Falls Park, but one main benefit of hiking is that it saves money and gives me new travel experiences. I do tend to spend money on things I don’t necessarily need, so in the new year I am excited to do things I haven’t done in past years that don’t cost me so much money and still allow me to see the world in a new, fresh, and healthy way.
Good Times and Good People
The next focus of mine this coming year is family and friends. I tend to be a pretty busy human and I like to pack my days full of productivity, but I’ve noticed that it sometimes leaves me with no energy to go out and spend time with people. By the end of the day I’m pretty wiped out, so when my friends do ask me to go out to dinner with them or spend the night out, I tend to make some excuse on why I don’t want to. I’m not too huge of a ~party girl~ as it is (really not at all, not even a little bit) but this year I want to focus on making time to get together with the people I love being around.
I do love being productive and getting things done, but sometimes I find myself taking no time to slow down, relax, and enjoy just living. Like girl, come on. Have some fun, chill out, and take a mental break for once. Which, takes me to my final aim for 2020…
Slowing Down Life
My final, and probably most important goal for 2020 is to slow down my life a bit. I want to take more time to be with my thoughts, be disconnected from the internet, and even read a bit more. One other positive aspect of hiking is that it gives you a time to be quiet, be in nature, be with your thoughts, and be completely immersed in everything and everyone around you. While I enjoy social media and netflix and being on my phone (I think we can all admit we do) I really do love the idea of taking a chunk of time to get back down to earth and just enjoy being. A few of the ways I plan on accomplishing this are hiking, being disconnected from technology while with family and friends, and reading. I used to be a huge reader when I was younger, but really fell out of it when life started to speed up. So, instead of sitting on my phone in the spare quiet time I have, my goal is to start using that time to read. Whether it’s diving into a good, long book, or just reading short novels that spark my interests, either way I believe this mental activation will be good for me!
I am extremely excited to see what this year brings to the table for me, and I’m hopeful that it will bring positive and lasting memories. I am beyond ready to get back to blogging in the new year and share with y’all every experience that I have! Here’s to a new year, a new decade, and new goals!
